First rule of buying for a Magic player: don’t buy them cards. Whatever you pick, they’ve either got it already or it’s “not really for this deck”. Ask them what they want and you’ll get a twenty minute breakdown of their EDH deck and still no answer.
So skip the cards. Here’s what we’d get them instead.
Work out what colour they play
Sit in on one pod at their LGS. You’ll know by turn three.
- They sit there with untapped mana saying no to everything? Blue. Get the Counter Every Spell Hoodie (R499) or the Nope Sweater (R399).
- The game ends before you’ve worked out the rules? Red. The I Choose Fireball Tee (R349).
- Their creatures keep coming back from the dead? Black. The Death Is a Resource Hoodie (R499) or the Reanimate Tee (R349).
- Forty lands and one enormous creature? Green. The Nature Tee (R349).
- They correct everyone’s rules, including the judge’s? The Turn Sequence Hoodie (R499).
- They never tell you what they’re holding? The You Should Worry Tee (R349).
Everything’s black, screen printed and comes in S to XXL. Not sure on size? Go one up. Nobody has ever complained about a roomy hoodie.
The safe bet: sleeves
Magic players go through sleeves the way they go through snacks at game night. Our Ultimate Guard Cortex matte sleeves are R199 for 100, in red, purple, petrol or pink. Match the colour to their deck and you’ll look like you know what you’re doing.
For the Commander player
If their Commander deck still lives in the precon box, fix that. They’ll tell you it’s a bracket 2 deck. It isn’t. Get them the box anyway. The Ultimate Guard Sidewinder 100+ (R449) holds the whole deck double sleeved and shuts with a magnet, so it won’t spill all over the floor of the car.
Delivery
R99 with The Courier Guy anywhere in South Africa, free if you spend over R600. A hoodie and a pack of sleeves gets you there. It takes 3 to 7 days, so don’t leave it for the 23rd of December.

And to the players reading this: what’s the best Magic gift you’ve ever been given? Bulk commons don’t count.
